Carcinoma-associated fibroblasts
WebMar 5, 2024 · By Sophia Hu. A group of activated fibroblasts called cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are one of the major components of the tumour microenvironment (TME) in solid tumours. They are found to be associated with poor survival due to their tumour-promoting functions, hence they have been receiving an increasing appreciation in … A cancer-associated fibroblast (CAF) (also known as tumour-associated fibroblast; carcinogenic- associated fibroblast; activated fibroblast) is a cell type within the tumor microenvironment that promotes tumorigenic features by initiating the remodelling of the extracellular matrix or by secreting cytokines. CAFs are a complex and abundant cell type within the tumour microenvironment; the number cannot decrease, as they are unable to undergo apoptosis.
